Wilshere rewarded with new deal

Arsenal have rewarded Jack Wilshere after an excellent first season with a long-term contract that will keep the youngster at the Emirates well into his twenties.

After making his debut for the first team last September aged just 16 years and 256 days, Wilshere became Arsenal's youngest ever player.

He opened his account for the Gunners ten days later with a goal against Sheffield United in the Carling Cup.

Wilshere also has Champions League experience, with the 17-year-old making a substitute appearance against Dynamo Kiev at the Emirates in November.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was delighted Wilshere penned a new deal, remarking: 'It is such great news that Jack has signed a new long-term
contract.

'Jack made great progress last season, playing at Under-18s, reserves and
first-team level and we all witnessed what a great young talent he is.'

'At still 17 years of age, the potential is huge for Jack and we are all delighted he has committed his long-term future to Arsenal," he told the club;s official website.

The midfielder with an eye for goal favours playing just behind a strike partnership but has also been used on either wing and his long-term offer was preceded by one yesterday for fellow young star Aaron Ramsey.

With Arsene Wenger's hands currently tied due to the tight budgets at Arsenal he will have to look more and more to youth talent to fill the void left by players leaving or retiring and is signalling that he has faith in those coming through that they can make the grade.
